Queer Committee

The Bay Area Queer Committee serves as a voice for LGBT issues within the National Lawyers Guild. We organize forums, engage in public education projects, support litigation, and co-sponsor the Thomas Steel Summer Law Student Internship. The National Queer Committee Co-chairs are Leah Gjertson and David Waggoner.

Transgender Know Your Rights Training for Trainers
The Bay Area Queer Committee in collaboration with the TGI Justice Project is developing a Know Your Rights training for trainers for the S.F. transgender community. The goal is to train members of the trans community to lead know your rights workshops where Guild attorneys will be present and onhand to answer questions.

Solomon Amendment
NLG law school chapters and other Guild members were actively involved in the campaign against the Solomon Amendment, a Congressional attack on schools that have enforced their non-discrimination policies against the military. In January 2004, the NLG joined other groups in an amicus brief in support of a challenge to the law. The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of Solomon in 2006, but Guild students continue to organize to protest the presence of on-campus JAG recruiters and the ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ policy.
