NLGSF mourns the recent passing of Jeff Adachi, San Francisco’s elected Public Defender and a long-time Guild supporter. Jeff was a true people’s lawyer. He aggressively defended those who most acutely felt the limitations and corruption of the criminal justice system: poor folks, people of color, undocumented immigrants. He valued community organizing, fought for bail reform, challenged misconduct by the police, judges and prosecutors.
Jeff’s passing leaves a tremendous gap in our legal bar’s progressive leadership that will be impossible to replicate, but essential and possible to fill because of the legacy he established. He mentored Guild and non-Guild attorneys alike across the Bay Area and set an inspiring example of how to practice law with courageous and principled leftist politics and at the most exemplary level of professional rigor.
NLGSF extends our most sincere condolences to the Adachi family and his colleagues and our gratitude for all he gave to us and our communities.
